Since its introduction in 1936, Fiesta dinnerware has been proudly manufactured in the United States — and it still is today. Every piece of Fiesta dinnerware is crafted at the company’s historic factory in Newell, West Virginia, a small town in the state’s northern panhandle, perched on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River. Fiesta has never moved its production overseas.

The factory has been in continuous operation for over 150 years, making it one of the first whiteware plants in the United States. The company produces approximately 3.1 million pieces of Fiesta dinnerware every year, all made in Newell.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

Fiesta’s roots in the region run deep. The factory sits on land along the Ohio River known for its rich clay deposits. While the local clay itself is too coarse for fine dinnerware, the Ohio River has long been instrumental in bringing in high-quality clays from other regions — a tradition that continues today. Every piece begins with domestically extracted raw materials shipped directly to the factory.

The manufacturing process blends time‑honored techniques with modern quality control:

  • Jiggering is used for plates, bowls, and mugs

  • Slip casting is used for hollow pieces such as pitchers and vases

  • Pressure casting is used for larger items like casserole dishes and oval platters

  • Hand‑finishing is required for several pieces, including the iconic Fiesta pitcher

All glazes are developed in an on‑site laboratory, where the company’s signature vivid colors are formulated. Each piece is then fired in a kiln at 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 hours — a process that brings out the vibrant colors Fiesta is known for. Interestingly, the pottery shrinks by about 10 percent during firing.

Built to Last

Fiesta dinnerware is renowned for its exceptional durability. It is made from fully vitrified, lead‑safe china — a material that is chip‑resistant and designed for daily use. Fiesta is also dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe (up to 350°F).

The company takes quality seriously. Every piece undergoes a thorough inspection before it leaves the factory, ensuring it meets the highest standards. As Matt Wicks, Chief Operating Officer of Fiesta Tableware Company, put it: “We’ve had stories of people dropping their ware on a granite countertop, and it chips their granite countertop, not the plate itself.”
